Carmen Miller, mother of four, made many elaborate birthday parties for her children back in Texas. Friends soon wanted her to create those little tea parties for their daughters. And so it began.
When Miller, 37, and husband Paul along with Jacob, McKayla, Sarah and Reese moved to Fuquay in 2006, her frustration hit a high due to what Miller felt were inadequate services for celebrating birthdays.
"My need to do up a birthday party with flair was the inspiration that fueled the concept for Pinky Toes," said Miller, a certified etiquette teacher.
Pinky Toes opened March 2007 on Broad Street in Varina as a boutique with whimsical and unique items for boys and girls. Miller was hopeful that the party idea would catch on.
And catch on it did! Without advertising, Miller hosted 200 parties in less than a year.
Little girls, ages 4 and up can celebrate themed birthday tea parties complete with costumes. Parents can select a party package that includes custom invitations and thank you notes, a dining table replete with food, drinks, signature cake and ice cream. Two private servers attend to the guests who receive crafts and goody bags.
Girls ages six and up can register for Pinky Toes Camp Monday through Thursday. Each day, the sessions change. On Spa day (manicures/pedicures) the girls are encouraged to paint their own fingers and toenails. There is also Makeup, Etiquette and Slumber Days (an in-pajama pizza party with movies).
To inspire confidence there is Etiquette Camp, a place where self-esteem is stressed Monday through Friday for ages seven and up. Ideas relative to gaining confidence, respect from teachers and overcoming shyness are learned through discussion and homework. Instruction for dining etiquette is provided for the proper setting of dinnerware, use of silverware and table talk.
"I hope we are working all the corners. I think that teens and college people had too much handed to them. My goal is to instill a work ethic into their character, one girl at a time," Miller said.
The popularity of Pinky Toes has grown so that there have been requests for teen parties, baby and bridal showers, Sweet 16 celebrations and adult parties.
Under consideration is a Death-by-Chocolate social and murder mystery night.
"I believe party-goers can have fun and be respectful at the same time. I do not allow my party-goers to be disrespectful to my help," said Miller.
"I have strict rules for my 14 employees who I expect to serve as role models. They are junior and senior high school students who benefit by learning life skills in management and leadership," Miller said.
Urged by mothers in other towns, a second Pinky Toes Party Palace opened in Cary in November 2007.
